Royal Wedding: Philip Treacy Hats

Victoria Beckham in a Treacy hat. Sadly, David is wearing clothes.

Treacy created 36 new hats for the royal wedding and you can’t even count how many existing collections were raided for this occassion. Last year I met Philip Treacy through a gracious invitation extended by Neiman Marcus.  His hats are amazing works of art:

Royal cousins

Journalists wore Treacy hats (except Ann – what’s with the flowers?)

Watch the royal wedding footage to see how many you can spot.

Kate Middleton Channels Grace Kelly, Ivanka Trump

The stories of the “shocking, plunging neckline” are greatly exaggerated, but there was a good slice of V showing.  Kate Middleton’s dress looked surprisingly like a cross between Grace Kelly (appropriate) and Ivanka Trump’s, and used a beautiful trend of the moment, lace.  I love how the lace at the top tied in with the hand-made applique that followed the entire hem of the gown:

“When she alighted from the carriage, there was a gasp. The crowd was delighted in her choice of dress.”

As had been hinted at months earlier, the dress was designed by Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton in ultimately not a full McQueen style.  A little curious, but lovely.

The earrings were a gift from her parents.  The tiara on loan from the Queen.

The ceremony was described as starting off as a relaxed garden party.

Kate Middleton’s Wedding Manicure

Have you been enjoying the wedding? It is lovely!  One thing I was anxious to find out was the manicure details, and it turns out that Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla Bowles had a bit of girl time with Kate.  Camilla’s long time manicurist Marina Scandoval from Jo Hansford salon traveled to give both women a luxury soak, exfoliation and deep tissue massage.  A custom mix of Bourjois no 28 Rose Lounge and Essie 423 Allure was applied.  The look is soft, enhanced beauty that is totally modern and spring like.  I only wish she had known about Shellac in Negligee – it would have lasted during her 6 week honeymoon!  The manicure wedding gift from Camille cost approximately $65 USD.

Ren Glycolactic Skin Renewal Peel Mask

For sensitive skin perfection

There are some products that prove themselves first time, right out of the box, and the Glycolactic Skin Renewal Peel Mask by Ren falls into that category.  I love the scent, texture, everything about this product.  Mostly I loved the way it was able to gently “decongest” my skin – you know how you can get an unexplainable tiredness going on – with natural fruit acids so that it surprisingly looked smooth and radiant.  I’m not a fan of always using granular exfoliation, so this was gentle and powerful enough for my needs. Once a week is all they ask, for 10 minutes at a time. This just requires a gentle rinse at the end.  At $55 a bottle, this is worth every drop for a gentle glow.

Nail Techs Don’t Need to Time Travel

Say no to the Wham-Bam-Thank-You Mani

Seth Godin touches on the sensitive topic of time today, something I’ve really been pondering.  Time management heavily impacts people in the beauty industry.  Everything seems to be scheduled around 30 minute increments, which is possible to hit often, but at what price?

Improving the trains (Seth Godin)

While making the trains run on time is a good thing, making them run early is not.

If you define success as getting closer and closer to a mythical perfection, an agreed upon standard, it’s extremely difficult to become remarkable, particularly if the field is competitive. Can’t get rounder than round.

In general, purple cows live in fields where it’s possible to reinvent what people expect.

The thing is, a 30 minute service will never be a constant.  Life has interruptions, people have unexpected requests, the person who took your booking had no idea the special steps your client needed, and there are just days where everyone is running late.

I think the last line is key: It’s possible to reinvent what people expect. In the same way the nail industry took a swing from xxx time to “20 minutes for a full set” (yes, that was an actual expectation), it’s possible to get people to swing back to focus on what is important.  Important to keep excellence at the forefront of your service.

I’m not saying we should opt for 3 hour services or be inconsiderate of schedules, absolutely not.  I’m saying watch the focus.  In/Out as fast as you can, but not at the expense of workmanship or communication.  You don’t need to hit 29 minute services consistently to keep everyone happy, but if you consistently focus on skill you’ll be able to perform well in reasonable amounts of time.  Allow yourself a little fun with clients, and a bit of wiggle room to be creative.

If you are having trouble hitting an ideal time frame, identify people who are excited to go on the more leisurely ride with you. Take them. As your experience grows, you will naturally shorten the amount of time you need to do a service, but you’ve trained yourself to do it well.

Along the way, you’ll find your expectations can change also.  Clients that were open gave me a freedom to discover techniques, ways to troubleshoot, an ideal to strive for.  They aren’t expecting a quick trip in a time machine, they love the journey. But they’ve also helped me up my game for those that can’t wait.  My eye is on the prize is for experience, on becoming remarkable, with time for service a close runner-up.

Do you reinvent expectations for yourself or your client? What are other ways you can wow?
