SAG Awards 2014: Lena Headey

Celebrity Stylist Mark Townsend styled Lena Headey from HBO’s ‘Games of Thrones’ for the 20th annual SAG Awards

“I fell in love with Lena Headey’s Jenny Packham dress. I felt it had a 70’s vibe to it, so I wanted her hair to be a modern take on a 70’s style, and the high bun was perfect. Townsend shares the steps with Solessence readers.

Get the Look:

· I prepped her hair by adding a few drops of Dove Pure Care Dry Oil Nourishing Treatment and then blow dried with a round brush.

· Next, I sprayed Dove Invigorating Dry Shampoo all over her hair to give the hair a cool texture

· Then I gathered the hair in a ponytail right at the crown of the head and braided the ponytail

· Once the braid was complete, I wrapped it around the base of the ponytail to create a bun and secured with bobby pins.

· I finished by spraying Sally Hershberger Texture Blast all over and scrunched the bun with my hands to break it up a bit and add some hold.”

SAG Awards 2014: Cate Blanchett

Robert Vetica, stylist for Vidal Sassoon Pro Series, and Cate Blanchett went for a soft, 60s-inspired up-do to complement Cate’s light pink Givenchy gown that had a beautiful and soft Grecian feel. Inspired by Brigitte Bardot and Kate Moss, Robert wanted to create a wispy up-do that showed off the dress’s feminine silhouette and sequin-trimmed details.

Get the Look:

1. First prep wet hair with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Boost & Lift Foaming Air Mousse, applying throughout the hair for touchable volume and hold.

2. Create a side part and then blow-dry hair with a small boar bristle round brush. Start by blow-drying hair in the front and create soft bangs. Once you have created the desired shape, clip the bangs in place while they cool. Then blow-dry the rest of the hair.

3. Once hair is dry, spray Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Heat Protect & Shine Spray to protect hair from heat before curling it. Using a 1-inch curling iron, take the hair and curl approximately 8 sections. “You don’t need to separate each section perfectly,” says Robert “but instead you can take random sections since you’re curling hair to create texture and bend.” Once the hair has cooled, brush out the curls to soften the look.

4. Spray Vidal Sassoon Pro Series ColorFinity Dry Shampoo in Intense Blondes all throughout the hair. “Some people just apply hairspray to their roots, but I applied the Dry Shampoo all throughout the hair, similar to how you use hairspray, to create additional texture and volume.” After the dry shampoo, back comb hair a bit at the roots with a teasing comb.

5. Pull hair back into a loose low ponytail, using your fingers to create the desired shape. Twist the rest of the ponytail into a deconstructed bun and pin the look in place.

6. To finish, spray hair with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Flexible Hold Hairspray to lock your look in place. Then spray hairspray onto your fingertips and nails, and using your fingers, apply the hairspray to the perimeter of the hair to tame flyaways and shape any loose pieces.

Golden Globes 2014: Taylor Shilling

Celebrity hairstylist Ryan Trygstad created the gorgeous look for Taylor Schilling of “Orange is the New Black” for the 2014 Golden Globes using Leonor Greyl products.

“We wanted to go with a look that was a bit 80s, late 70s.  Hair that was bigger on the bottom, but nothing too stylized.  Taylor is wearing this gorgeous emerald silk dress with gold heels and reminds me of Sharon Stone in Scarface, it has that sexy 70s vibe.

Get the Look:

I began by prepping her hair with Leonor Greyl’s Lait Luminescence on the ends to keep them soft.  Since her hair is on the finer side, I wanted to give her more volume all around.  I used the Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice, put some in my hand and worked it section by section into the roots. The Mousse is so easy to work with, wasn’t sticky at all, gave really nice body and shine, and smelled amazing. I didn’t apply mousse to the ends since we wanted to keep them really soft.  Then I blew out her hair with a small round brush to give a lot of body.

To create the shape to her hair, I prepped it with the Leonor Greyl Laque Souple and then used a 1” curling iron to create a loose wave all around.  I kept the ends kind of pointy for a more fluffy feeling.  After, I used the Lacque Souple again to set the entire look.  The hairspray is really light which we liked because we wanted to keep her hair touchable.

Next, I added in extensions that I put together myself and curled them.  I focused the curls more towards the bottom of the head to bring it up and create a triangle shape.  Then, I used the Leonor Greyl Natural Boar Bristle Brush and loosely brushed out the curls and backed combed a bit.  Keeping the top of the hair flat really finished out the shape I wanted to create.

Lastly, we used the Huile Secret de Beaute over her entire body for a bit of sheen.”

Golden Globes 2014: Emilia Clarke

Celebrity Stylist Mark Townsend worked with Emilia Clarke from HBO’s ‘Games of Thrones’ for the 71st annual Golden Globes and shares his techniques with Solessence readers

This is the first time New Dove® Advanced Hair Series products are making an appearance on the red carpet. Comprised of the New Dove® Oxygen Moisture and New Dove® Pure Care Dry Oil collections, New Dove® Advanced Hair Series is a premium line of products that utilize the most advanced weightless moisturizing formulas and contain luxurious ingredients, designer fragrances and beautiful packaging. Launches this month!

Get the Look:

“I was so inspired by Emilia’s Proenza Schouler gown. The mix of embroideries looked like movement, so I wanted her hair to move beautifully as well.

– I prepped her hair by adding a few drops of the new Dove Pure Care Dry Oil Nourishing Treatment in her damp hair and combed through. It is loaded with African macadamia oil which is so nourishing for the hair.
– Next, I sprayed the new Dove Oxygen Moisture Root Lift Spray to the roots and blow dried with a round brush.
– Then, I took 3-inch sections of hair and wrapped each section around a 1 1/2inch curling iron. The large barrel creates bends in the hair instead of curls.
– When all the hair had been through the iron, I sprayed Oribe Dry Texture Spray all over to give the hair great texture.
– I finished by taking a few more drops of the new Dove Pure Care Dry Oil Nourishing Treatment in my hands and then raked it through her hair to give the hair tons of shine without weighing it down.”
