Color Swatches – CND Shellac Spring 2011- March Release
Click here for the new Fall September 2011 CND Shellac colors and here for layering options
Finally! New CND Spring/March swatches can begin. I have seen the colors and layering options a few times over, and they are fun! Thanks to CND I was able to provide better photos of the spring 2011 Shellac release for you in this December post and, as I did with the first set of Shellac, I’ll be adding actual hand watches. These are all two coats with base and top.
I’ll continually update this page until all Shellac swatches are available. To get you this information before the March launch, so you know what you want to order and/or try on first, I’m posting photos as I can get swatches. They will be updated for better lighting/consistent look. Keep checking back.
Rock Royalty – the bottle is not a match. This is a plum/purple
Black Pool – Very rich black
Hollywood – True to the bottle, and even prettier. If you can handle a bright red, this one is flecked with metallics. Stunning.
Iced Coral – A very useful layering color, this is also a great peach/pink with a hint of green. I’m not the biggest fan of frosts but this one is perfect for my skintone.
Gotcha – This bubbly pink is much brighter than the original photo but softer than last year’s Tutti Frutti. Shown with glitter
Cocoa – This is a lovely camel that serves as a really pretty base for Shellac layering or with the right skin tone as an updated neutral.
Original Cocoa photo swatch:
Decadence – This is a tough one to photograph. It keeps popping out cherry red – I’d say the thumb is the closest in shade. In terms of swatching, it is very similar to the CND Jason Wu collection red. It is on the sheer side, like a jelly. I didn’t think that was possible with Shellac. Very, very pretty, but looks best with three coats.
Hot Pop Pink
It doesn’t get much pinker than this! Similar to OPI’s Strawberry Margarita.
Beau – You may wonder why you are getting the color Negligee in a Romantique bottle, but wait, there are differences. Beau comes on with a bit of a violet/blue and white transparency. This alternates as a good layering and base color as well.
Clearly Pink Clearly Pink is that crystal clear with a hint of pink color many have been asking for. Although Pink & White/Traditional Frenches have been out for many years now, think of the base color used. There you have it. It makes for an extremely clean looking nail, but is a little too clear if you have any trouble spots or damaged nails. Example below shows how nice it looks on nail, and how exposed any damage will be.
Masquerade
Mmmm, this is one I was waiting for. It has the same richness as Red Baroness but a lot more pink. It photos a bit mottled. While it is highly pigmented, 3 coats can probably ease out any shadowing if you are having troubles. Very true to the bottle color, even a tad darker.
Mother of Pearl
Contrary to most impressions, Mother of Pearl is not a white Shellac with glitter, but a clear with glitter. It’s very random how the glitter lays – I find multiple shakes and laying the bottle on the side helps get the glitter on the brush. Very, very hard to photograph, you can see a pic of it overlaid on Black Pool below, as well as how it can look coming out of the bottle

This new batch of colors plus the first release brings 24 colors total, but CND’s original goal had been to have 100 by fall. Not sure if they are still up to that but these new colors bring the a huge variety of layering options. Here are a few:
HELLO, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHICH COLOURS ARE CREAM-NOT SHIMMER. CAN YOU PLS TELL ME SOME OF THEM?FOR EX.: DECADENCE, ROCK ROYALTY, HOLLYWOOD, HOT POP PINK
MJ, thank you, you made my day!
I love your work. I’d like to see you do a polishing video. You polishing is PERFECT! 🙂

Hi Bobby Lou, do you get the nail magazines? CND often has a fold-out poster, no charge! Also, if you are a licensed nail tech you can register on http://www.cnd.com. Once you log into the pro section, there is a Tools & Support section where you can get free marketing materials if you have purchased a Shellac salon rack, and other useful tools.
I absolutely love the Shellac and am getting great results with all my clients. Only had a couple come back because it chipped but Im sure it’s because thier nails were very short and it was very difficult to cap the free edge. I am the only nail tech in our beauty salon and am sometimes doing 6 or 7 Shellac manicures a day! Very exciting!! I only wish 2 things 1. My customers really want more color selections and 2. I think it would be very nice for Shellac to send profesional salons advertising materials for free since it benefits them. I cant afford to purchase the posters, signs and such so it would be awesome if they would contribute them since promoting Shellac would only increase their business.
Carol,
The problem with mixing CND Shellac is not with the color combination, but rather stabilization of formula. Because the formulations for each color are different, CND does not recommend mixing the liquid product. There will be an unbalance of solvents and pigments and could lead to product breakdown very quickly. You are better off layering the colors for product integrity and reliability.
Hi all
Just wanted to let you know that I successfully mixed(in a glass dish) Cocoa and Romantique together for a lovely color to use on my toes. It does work to mix-just stir with a wooden stick-no problem at all so try some more combos–it worked for me.
Martie, if you haven’t seen them already, please check the top of the blog, on the header bar under “Swatches”. There are several collections for layering and I’m still adding. Thanks for the request!
Please show us more layering with CND Shellac. Thanks.
I’m still waiting for a very light white like Essie’s waltz or marshmellow.
Hi Carol – asking if you can mix the colors is a great question. Each bottle of CND Shellac is an individual formulation of color instead of one base formula with color added. Because of this, physically mixing colors can cause breakdowns. Don’t mix colors in liquid form.
That doesn’t mean you are limited! Shellac layers beautifully after curing to create many new looks (see my header bar for links to swatches). When layering, it is important to cure each layer first, then use thin, even coats. Once you get the hang of how much color to apply to get your desired look, you’ll have a lot of fun with it.
Hi
I am loving CND Shellac but can you mix colors???? No one seems to have addressed this question. I am looking for a mauve–rose mauve matte color
Thanks

Hi Denise,
Congratulations on your success! With just 24 colors out, your nail spa is still getting a demand of 40-45 Shellac manicures a day. Demand has been, and will continue to be, off the charts for this product. I know you know this, but CND has only has the product out for a little over a year now, and by September they will have added another 6 colors for solids and layering. Each and every color is a unique formulation, so it’s not as easy as creating one mix and adding different dyes.
In September there will be 30 color choices + layering.
In February they will release another 6, bringing the total to 36+layering.
The goal is 100 unique colors + layering options that will be well loved and versatile.
Have you ever used the Colours & Effects lacquer system? CND knows how much cream colors are loved, and based that colour collection on 50 creams with 15 accessory/Effects colors. CND Shellac looks to be going very much the same route, so that the Shellac system will have a great base with additional effects. Pearls, glitters, you can see it already. I am working on posting all of the layering combinations with detailed photos so all of the options are clear (please be sure to check those for options too).
I’m also curious if you’ve tried any other artwork, even simple things to mix it up? When we were just at 12 colors, I knew my clients coming in every two weeks would need a shake. This is true, I believe, no matter what you are using. I’d used glitter with gels & liquid/powder prior and began using it immediately with Shellac. It took off, and I am in a somewhat conservative area. You can try very monochromatic looks for people who need something more subtle. You can add rhinestones. You can layer and remove. You can even offer traditional nail art over Shellac. If you are in Florida I think you’d have a lot of license to really go creative.
So don’t feel discouraged. There is no question – CND loves you! That’s why they are taking such care to release the right colors that will benefit the collection as seen from the whole picture.
Sorry so long. Have a good weekend!
H
I own a Nail Spa and the ONLY gel nail polish I use is Shellac, love the quality and the way it looks. Comes off quickly and not harming my customers nail. I constantly baddle with customers complaining of the limit of colors in Shellac besides other brands. I feel like a recording explaining the reasons and other options. I just wish CND will get more involved in the customers blog comments. Plain simple, we need more colors or better selection to make very good layers. And has anyone tell the scientist in CND that LOTS of people like better matte colors than pearlized colors?
We have 4 tech’s and my self, I do about 40 to 45 Shellac Manicure daily. (don’t believe me? ask my south Miami distributor. I order by boxes).
I love Shellac I wonder if they love us.
Hi Jan,
I used Black Pool under Negligee. Really nice blue.
This photographed dark, but here is an example on nails: http://www.solessence.com/2011/03/28/notd-nailed-from-london-fashion-week/
Thanks for asking. Give it a try!
what is the combo for the navy shimmer color on the left on the bottom?
Lindsey, six new colors are coming out in September, and another six early 2012. I’ve seen a couple of previews and it is very exciting!
Shellac is the best invention in nail care. I wish I had thought of it. Recommend any color because they are all great.
Hi, thank you very much for the swatches. These photos are really helpful to pick the colors. I put links to your post about cnd shellac on my blog, http://blog.esthersnc.com. Thanks again

100 Colors!? Are they releasing anymore in 2011?
At just 12 a year, this may take awhile! lol
The center is Black Pool with Iced Coral, the Blue is Black Pool with Negligee. Post coming!
Beautiful! I love Rock Royalty. What are the color combos at the bottom? I’m especially interested in the shimmery turquoise one 🙂
Silky, I wouldn’t give up yet. There are many alternatives with layering (CND is known for the Effects line and Shellac options are similar), plus the line is set to number 100+ colors soon.
I was expecting more vibrant colors. I’m a little dissapointed with CND Shellac.
I just love rock royalty!
Love the hot pop pink!
Cannot wait to see the rest of the swatches/real photos. The bottles never do the colors justice.
Thanks for sharing!!
Ooh I really want the Gotcha! I think that is so pretty 🙂
