Dilemma: I Spy…Disease

As a licensed nail tech, I see a lot of skin and nail woes when someone comes in for a manicure or pedicure.  I am so into the skin and nailcare portion, I look forward to consultations and getting clients to an agreed upon path to having the best hands and feet possible.  Although manicurists aren’t licensed to diagnose or treat medical issues, per say, we are often the first to be able to alert a client to a possible problem. This poses a dilemma.  If someone mentioned:

  • Half and Half nails could be a signal you need liver testing
  • Wavy horizontal Beau’s Lines are a clue to a systemic disturbance/matrix damage
  • Dry, flaky, welts on your legs need immediate biopsy for skin cancer

Would this anger you or make you consider checking things out?  Is your salon time a time to escape all of your cares, or do you look to your nail tech for advice?  Nail techs, do you tell all, or is your policy “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” to clientele?
